Easy Card Layout Focusing on Pattern Papers: Ideal for Beginner Card Mak...

Welcome! We are taking it back to basics today and focusing on a very easy and pretty card layout that focuses on patterned or Designer Series Papers.

This is ideal for beginner card makers or card makers who like to create in bulk for all occasion, craft fairs or charities.

There are a few tips I will share on today's cards but before I do, are you signed up for my email list? This is the first place I announce events, classes, shares, clubs, new catalogs and more!

I will be opening registration for my paper share for the new 2023-2024 Annual Catalog tomorrow! Registration will be open from 4/26-5/1/2023. It's a narrow window so be sure you are signed up or you can email me and I will happily send you the links when registration opens.

CARD MEASUREMENTS
  • Card Base: 4-1/4 x 11" Score: 5-1/2"
  • DSP Pattern 1: 2-5/8 x 4"
  • DSP Pattern 2: 2-5/8 x 4"
  • Basic White Cardstock Strip: 1/2 x 4"
  • Insert (Optional) Basic White: 4 x 5-14/"
  • Die Cut Shape for Sentiment (Coordinating Cardstock)
  • Die Cut Embellishments (Hearts, Stars, etc.) (Coordinating Cardstock)
INSTRUCTIONS

Once you have your DSP and card bases ready, assemble your cards by gluing the top DSP panel, then the bottom and glue the strip where the two pieces meet in the middle.

Stamp sentiment onto the coordinating die cut piece using the Charming Sentiments Bundle and Pretty Peacock ink. (I heat embossed the darker shade cardstock with White heat emboss, optional)

NOTE: Charming Sentiments will carry over to the new catalog but this week is the last week to get the 10% bundle savings.

Die cut desired die cut shapes (hearts, stars also from the Charming Sentiments bundle) in coordinating cardstock shade.

I have pictures below showing which new colors were used with the Bright & Beautiful DSP.

NEW CARD MAKER TIPS -- SIMPLE CARD TIPS
  • Choose one paper pack at a time and enjoy mixing and patterns the colors/ patterns
  • Keep the pieces and measurements simple and to a minimum
  • Use one stamp set and/ or bundle per card set (I even recommend just one or two phrases)
  • Using coordinating color cardstock is optional but so much fun if you can
  • Choose just one or two ink colors
  • Choose just one or two card layouts
  • If making a card set, decide how many cards: 5, 10, 15 and cut your pieces ahead so you can assemble in one sitting
When you are making cards in the beginning I recommend simple card bases (no fun folds or crazy angles) and keeping the products simple, just one pack of papers, just one or two stamps - we call this simple stamping - and even just one or two card layouts will help as you get into a groove with your new hobby!

Make it fun! Make it colorful and cute but do not feel like you need all of the things. Start simple and then build on your cardmaking skills and products over time!

Products I recommend for new card makers:

  • Paper Trimmer (This cuts and scores in one tool, very handy! I use mine everyday)
  • Paper Snips Scissors
  • One adhesive to start: Multipurpose glue or Stampin' Seal is a great foundational adhesive
  • Bone Folder: helps get crisp edges on your score lines
  • Stamp Cleaner: I like the Simply Shammy because its a quick cleaner
  • 1 or 2 clear blocks (for your stamps)
  • 1 stamp set or bundle
  • 1 paper pack
  • 1 variety cardstock pack
  • 1 or 2 colors of ink
  • 1 pack of medium envelopes
Embellishments are fun but even those can be additional items added later. Consider card kits when you are starting which offers a little of everything or consider shares where you can get samplers of products or clubs where you can collect your products over time!

I hope you found this helpful! Enjoy and happy crafting!
