The Trick to Add a Fur Effect to Your Animal Stamps: Alcohol Marker Tuto...

If you have invested in Stampin' Blends alcohol markers but consider yourself a beginner when it comes to blending and shading then this is a tutorial for you!

Here's a quick look at the difference between very basic coloring
and the flicking technique with alcohol markers (Stampin' Blends)

Easter Friends Stamp Set
Colors: Gray Granite, Smoky Slate Blends, Fresh Freesia, Basic White

Pampered Pets Stamp Set
Colors: Stampin' Blends in 400, 600, 800
Color Combination: Poppy Parade, Basic Black and Basic White

I personally am a "beginner" when it comes to alcohol markers and blending and I wanted to step up my skills so I'm taking a course and I learned a technique when coloring animals that I had to share with you! After all, Easter is coming soon and don't we just want to have fun coloring furry chicks and bunnies?

I also wanted to demonstrate with Pampered Pets because it shows two different types of stamp art (one is just line art, very simple with no shading or detail) and the other - Easter Friends - is that Distinktive style stamp that already incorporates shadow and highlight in the stamped images.

In my opinion, as a beginner, its nice to work with images that already show you where the shadow and light will go. Easter Friends is perfect for this.

Many people who enjoy coloring stamped images prefer line art because its a clean slate and you can add the highlight and shadow from whichever direction you like.

Before we get into the tutorial here are is the information if you'd like to shop with me and also really important - - - SALE-A-BRATION ends tomorrow! 2-28-2022! You still have time to earn free products with a $50 or more purchase! You still have time to take advantage of the Join special as well!

Stampin' Blends Shades for the Dog:
  • Stampin' Blend 400
  • Stampin' Blend 600
  • Stampin' Blend 800
  • Smoky Slate Dark
  • Basic Black Light
  • Poppy Parade Dark
Stampin' Blends Shades for the Rabbit:
  • Gray Granite Light & Dark
  • Smoky Slate Light & Dark
  • Basic Black Light (for the eyes)
IMPORTANT TIPS FOR THIS FLICKING TECHNIQUE
  • I recommend three shades, a light, medium and dark alcohol marker in the same color family (in this case Browns/ Grays)
  • Start with the lightest shade, build with medium and finish with darkest shade
  • "Flick" small strokes in the same direction with each color
  • When flicking with the lightest color you can make the longer strokes
  • When flicking with the medium tone build in the color with slightly smaller strokes
  • When flicking in the darkest tone keep this shorter and in the place where we'd have shadow
  • Start with one section at a time, for example, start with dogs legs each time
  • Stroke upward - do not recommend - stroking downward (this gives a consistent, natural look)
  • Rotate your image to stay consistent as you build your flicking strokes and colors
  • Hold your marker close to the tip and try to stay vertical for this flicking technique (when you hold marker angled to the side it could create thicker strokes and you could lose that detail stroke appearance of hairs)
  • Practice makes perfect! Remember, I'm also learning and consider myself in the beginner phase. If you deviate from any of the tips it's totally ok. The great thing about alcohol markers is that ability to blend and if you go too dark in one spot you can go over it with a lighter color and lighten it back down.
CARD MEASUREMENTS
  • Cut and 8-1/2 x 11 cardstock sheet in half and score at 5-1/2" (you will get two card bases from each sheet)
  • Pampered Pets has a 4 x 5-1/4" layer of Basic White and then a DSP layer in 4 x 5-1/4" as well.

Maximize the Use of Your Stamp Sets: Stamping in Repeat Patterns on Your Handmade Cards (Seas the Day Bundle)

Seas the Day is such a fun bundle to work with! It's no secret I love to create my own backgrounds and patterns with stamps. I will often study Designer Series Paper patterns so I can create my own with sets that may not have coordinating paper or if that paper has retired.

Seas the Day does not have coordinating paper so today's tutorial is going to walk through ideas to stamp patterns in repeat.

New Host Code!

Shop with Host Code Link: https://www.stampinup.com?hostcode=9UAERDJQ

I recommend the Host Code link when you plan to spend $50.00 or more before tax. You will earn Sale-a-Bration rewards until 2/28/2022. You will also receive a FREE GIFT from me when you place an order.

BACKGROUND OPTION #1 (Single)

The first option is using one stamp in one color and stamping in one direction. I think this is the easiest option and there is such impact in repeating a pattern!

BACKGROUND OPTION #2 (Multi)

The second option is Multi Pattern Stamping. This mean you choose multiple stamp images (usually in the same theme) and stamp in multiple colors and in different directions. This is so much fun to experiment with!

BACKGROUND OPTION #3 (Two Stamp & Technique)

When you take out a stamp set and just start stamping in different colors in different patterns you will find fun new designs. When I stamped the seaweed with the yellow fish (Daffodil Delight) I love the look. I wanted to create a whole sheet with that pattern and I also added some shading with a Blending Brush and ink to give an impression of water. It turned out lovely but don't be afraid to experiment. Go with the creative flow!

WATERCOLOR BACKGROUND PATTERN (DISNEY CARS INSPIRED)

If you want to create multiple cards with a similar theme then consider this watercolor background technique. You can also use Stampin' Blends for this type of project if you'd like an alternate option.

I chose watercolor. This type of watercoloring isn't what you traditionally think of when you see watercolor. This is detail watercoloring but with our inks instead of pens or markers. Creating a background like this takes a little time but is worth it. If you love coloring or bringing images to life with details then you will LOVE this technique.

I was under the weather when I created this and when I'm not feeling great I actually like to color. It helps to calm my mind and soothe me. Let me know in the comments below what you like to do when you aren't feeling your best to help cheer you up.

If you have kids or grandkids then you may recognize
these toys and the inspiration for today's card ideas

Card Idea 3 of 4: Splatter Birthday
Stitched Rectangle Sizes: 3-1/2 x 4-3/4", 3-3/4 x 5-1/8"

Card Idea 4 of 4: Black and White Banners Card

Ok, if you're still with me then let's talk about the watercolor part of this project.

Stampin' Up! sells 5 x 7 Watercolor Paper sheets "Fluid 100" in the Annual Catalog. I used a different brand that is 9 x 12 so I could create a larger background sheet, but you can also try this on the Shimmery White Cardstock from Stampin' Up! if you want a larger paper size that is watercolor friendly. I did not have any Shimmery White Cardstock on hand to try on camera.

I have found when it comes to Water Painters to not let the brushes stay sopping wet. If there is too much water on your brush or too much water transferred to the image you are coloring you may go outside the lines or find multiple colors bleeding together. For the coloring of the cars you want to get a nice balance of color and water. Keep a towel or paper towel nearby for dabbing away excess water if needed.

The more water you use the less color. This creates a very soft look. The less water the more intense the color.

Here is a guide for the amount of water used per color on the background pattern:

  • Mint Macaron Van - MORE Water
  • Daffodil Delight Car - MORE Water
  • Poppy Parade Sports Car - VERY LITTLE Water *just enough to wet the bristles*
  • Balmy Blue Windows - MORE Water
  • Gray Granite Hubcaps - SOME Water for a soft look
  • Memento Black Tires - NO WATER *Dipped brush into ink without any drops of water on block*
Water Painters can be filled with water and water dispenses when you squeeze the barrel and it comes out onto the bristles of the brush. I take a few drops of the ink from our re-inkers and put them on a clear block. If I'm mixing the color with water I'll also add a few drops of water to block and then create the desired blend of color and water.

I like to test color on a scrap piece of watercolor paper before coloring on my background pattern.

You can use water painters again and again in multiple colors. Just clean brush tip between uses. I actually used the same brush for every color on my background sheet. I probably should have switched to the smallest brush tip for the tires but the middles size brush worked great as well.

Take your time. Enjoy the coloring process. When using multiple colors with water be patient. Either let the ink dry before going in with another layer or color, or if you need to speed up the drying process use your heat tool to help set the color. I decided to use the heat tool before running the finished sheet through my Stampin' Cut & Emboss Die Cut Machine. When you take the time to create a detailed background the last thing you want is smearing.

If you make a mistake don't let it stop you and resist starting over. Remember, you will be cutting this up into smaller sections. You can always layer an embellishment over the boo-boo or cut out the piece you don't love. I chose coloring inside the lines but I did go outside the lines several times. I accidentally got ink on my hand when it was still wet and blotted it right into the center of my background pattern. And it was red! But I kept going. It's ok to go outside the lines. It's ok not to have the perfect blend. It's ok if you don't get the water/ ink ratio right the first, second or third time. When trying something new give yourself grace. Think about Kindergarteners. My son reminds me daily to stop taking myself so seriously and just enjoy it. Be messy if that's what works for you! I promise the person who receives your card is going to be thrilled. They won't care how perfect you were. Handmade imperfection warms the heart!

Ok, I hope you enjoyed today's blog!

Free Online Card Class REPLAY Now Available & My New Artisan Crafter Design Team Role with the Luv 2 Stamp Group

Two blog posts in one day is a first for me but it's completely worth it! My post earlier today was all about the details of my new Ordering Special to go along with today's card class featuring the Abstract Beauty Suite.

This post will also include the Ordering Special information and Host Code Shop link along with the replay of the class!

Shop with Host Code Here: https://www.stampinup.com?hostcode=JWJA4GPU

The full version of the class (unedited) is on my business Facebook Page - Stamping with Hart. I edit a "tutorial only" version for YouTube to cut down on chatter and shorten time for those who want to craft along to the video. The edited version is what is posted here.

This free class will stay available on YouTube and Facebook for anyone who wants to watch. I am always happy to provide card ideas and layouts with the fabulous products Stampin' Up! has to offer!

The Ordering Special is for one week only - February 1 - 7, 2022. When you place a $50.00 order (before tax) or more with me in the online Stampin' Up! store, you will receive the card kits I made in today's class, a PDF Tutorial and the Abstract Beauty Ephemera Pack.

You can order whatever products you like (it doesn't have to be what I used today) and those products will ship to you from Stampin' Up! along with a Sale-a-Bration reward. (You qualify for Sale-a-Bration rewards at $50.00 as well until 2/28/2022).

Shop with Host Code Here: https://www.stampinup.com?hostcode=JWJA4GPU

The 4 card kits and Free Abstract Beauty Ephemera Pack will ship from me. The PDF Tutorial will be emailed to you the day the card kits are shipped.

If you have any questions let me know. I am happy to help. This is a GREAT deal which is why it is only for one week.

My ARTISAN CRAFTER DESIGN TEAM Role

I am so excited to officially announce my Artisan Crafter Design Team role with the Luv 2 Stamp Group. I am very fortunate in my upline. I am the downline of two incredibly successful and generous demonstrators. I was recently chosen along with two other demonstrators to be one of three Artisan Crafters for the Luv 2 Stamp Group for the next three months!

In February, March and April 2022 you will see an Artisan Crafter Luv 2 Stamp Group Watermark and hashtag on my social media #L2SGroupArtisanCrafter. I will also be posting to the Artisan Crafter Luv 2 Stamp Pinterest Board!  My sincere thanks to Patty Bennett, Leader of the Luv 2 Stamp Group for selecting me as one of these Artisan Crafters for her group. It's such a thrill and I cannot wait to bring you fun, creative projects and cards!

The STARTER KIT

This brings me to the Starter Kit. I talk about the Starter Kit often on my videos and also on the blog. There is no doubt its an incredible value and savings. It's very cool to be able to customize a craft kit with $125.00 worth of products and only pay $99.00. It's awesome to get free shipping and even more fun to get TWO ADDITIONAL FREE STAMP SETS during Sale-a-Bration. It is absolutely the best deal from a value standpoint. *Sale-a-Bration join offer ends 2/28/2022*

What you don't get to see is the community of stampers and crafters in the demonstrator groups. There is so much inspiration and talent and kindness in these groups. There is so much fun happening on the demonstrator side of things and there are opportunities all of the time to participate in different ways (if you are interested). For example, I applied to be an Artisan Crafter on Patty's team. That was something I chose to submit my name for. It was pure joy to get it and there are incentives as well. Those are things I wish I could fully communicate and can't quite capture the essence of which is why I recommend the Starter Kit for anyone who loves Stampin' Up!'s products, who loves watching and interacting on Facebook Lives or YouTube Lives. If you love seeing the unboxings and the new product sneak peeks and all of the fun of a new catalog launch, purchasing the starter kit would be a great choice for you! You can see what it is like from the demonstrator side of things in terms of community. Do not be worried about having to sell products. The majority of demonstrators are hobbyists. They enjoy the discount, the community and first access to catalogs and products.

If you are spending monthly on stamps and crafts and you love it, the value of the Starter Kit is also a great idea for you. As a demonstrator you get a 20% discount on purchases. There is potential for a 25% discount with Stampin' Up!

Consider the Starter Kit if stamping is your joy and you love Stampin' Up!

Every person and every experience is unique. I can only tell you how grateful I am that I made the choice to purchase the starter kit. I had no idea about the community when I joined. I had no idea the friends I would make and the fun I'd have creating for myself and for all of you. It's been such a pleasure for me personally and I hope that comes across every time you see a blog post, a picture of a project or a video on my channel.

I will be posting two projects per week for the next three months with the Artisan Crafter Luv 2 Stamp Group logo and hashtag.

I hope you enjoy today's class!

Happy Crafting!

Melinda

Abstract Beauty Free Online Cardmaking Class & a NEW Ordering Special

Hello and welcome!

Today at 11:00 am ET is my 3rd free online class I've held where anyone can watch live or in the replay to celebrate our new Mini Catalog and Sale-a-Bration event from Stampin' Up!

We make 4 cards in the class. You can watch and create with me at your convenience!

ORDERING SPECIAL (2/1/2022 - 2/7/2022)

I have an ordering special for this class for one week only!

When you place a $50.00 or more order (before tax) with me in the online store using Host Code: JWJA4GPU you will receive the 4 Card Kits from today's Abstract Beauty Class, a PDF Tutorial (written instructions) and a free gift from me which will be the Abstract Beauty Ephemera Pack. I will also cover the shipping of your kits.

Use this link to shop with the Host Code Here:  https://www.stampinup.com?hostcode=JWJA4GPU

The products you order will come from Stampin' Up! The card kits and free gift will come from me.

Shipping: Due to the slower shipping times expect to receive your card kits before the end of the month. I will place the order when the Ordering Special ends (2/7/22) and will need time to prepare the kits. I would usually say 7-10 days but please allow for 14-20 days. I will ship them as soon as I can. I appreciate your patience with shipping.

Once I complete the class I will make the replay available here on my blog and on YouTube. I will also post photos of the finished cards. If you want to see the cards prior to my events then sign up for my email list. This is where I share information first regarding classes, events, sneak previews, upcoming promotions, products etc. https://lp.constantcontactpages.com/su/GLk7fdL

If you are new here I keep the replays as is on Facebook and I edit a "tutorial only" version for YouTube for those who just want the class and not the conversation.

Typical videos are around 30-50 minutes. A card class where we make 4 projects will typically run for one hour or slightly longer.

If you have any questions do not hesitate to contact me! You can email me at stampingwithhart@gmail.com or message me on Facebook.

If you do not already have a demonstrator I would love to work with you!
