MORE Alternates from the August 2022 Paper Pumpkin Kit: Sweet Sunflowers - WATERCOLOR BACKGROUND

Okay, I couldn't resist a second round of alternate cards from the August 2022 Paper Pumpkin Kit: Sweet Sunflowers.

When I found out this kit sold out and would not have refills I decided to focus on utilizing the stamp set. We are creating a sunflower field scene using the stamp set, Stayz On Ink, Re-Inkers and water painters.

I will be using pieces from the kit for the cards (use all you can)! but in this round of alternates I will be bringing more coordinating cardstock and more tools.

Traditional Sunflowers! If you LOVE those beautiful vibrant yellow sunflowers then you will LOVE this background.

Card Base: Basic Black A2
Watercolor Panel: 4 x 5-1/4"

Color Palette for Traditional Sunflower Watercolor Background

Burgundy Sunflowers! My thanks and a shout out to Suzie F. who told me a story about having burgundy sunflowers that grew up to 15 feet tall! Her story inspired me to make several cards with that theme as well. I opted for Merry Merlot for these sunflowers.

Card Base: Basic White A2
Free Foil Hexagon Sheet from kit 4 x 5-1/4"
Watercolor Panel: 3-1/2 x 4-3/4"

Color Palette for Burgundy/Merlot Sunflower Watercolor Background

Card Base: Mossy Meadow from the Kit!
Die Cut Layer from Kit: 4 x 5-1/4"
Watercolor Layer: 2-3/4 x 4"

Card Base: Merry Merlot A2
Watercolor Strip: 1 x 4"
2 die cut hexagon watercolor images - Beautiful Shapes Dies
2 die cut mossy meadow layer from kit - Beautiful Shapes Dies

Card Base: Watercolor Base from Kit
Watercolor Layers: 1 x 4 (4 of them)
Blackberry Bliss Layers: 1-1/8 x 4-1/8" (4 of them)

There are 5 Alternate Cards today. 1 of the 5 was created on my Facebook Live this past Thursday. I created the other 4 cards this weekend and combined the video since it's the same watercolor technique.

HERE IS WHAT I RECOMMEND (aside from August 2022 Paper Pumpkin Kit)

  • Watercolor Paper
  • Stayz On Ink
  • Water Painters
  • Re-Inkers or Ink Pads (Ink spots from your cuts also work)
  • Several coordinating cardstock shades, I chose darker colors for this: Basic Black, Merry Merlot, Blackberry Bliss
  • Embellishments - Black and White Gingham Ribbon, Iridescent Rhinestones...
  • Beautiful Shapes Dies
  • Extra Adhesive
One of the great things about Paper Pumpkin is how simple it is but when I create alternates I do bring in more tools: Paper Trimmer, Stampin' Cut & Emboss Machine, Paper Snips, Dies, etc. Now you certainly don't have to use it all, but this is a go-to when I create alternates.

WATERCOLORING AT ITS MOST BASIC

Mix color with water and paint onto watercolor or very thick paper. I like to layer. I put a light wash down first and then come back around and lay down deeper color. This creates a pretty background effect and only takes 1-2 re-inker drops. If you like to color I think you'll like this.

CREATING A BACKGROUND

I hear from many of you that it can be intimidating to create stamped backgrounds. You worry about making a mistake or it not looking perfect. That's ok. You can always layer over or trim out mistakes. It's ok to paint outside the lines. It adds to the handmade look in my opinion.

Start with one image and stamp that everywhere first. I started with the sunflowers.

Then build...

the leaf
the sprig of flowers yet to bloom
the bees

Just fill in where you see white space and before you know it you have a beautiful sunflower background! And you can create this year after year because your stamps last! Even after the paper pieces in the kit are long gone.

Okay, let's talk alternate projects. Alternate products used are listed below.

THE SUNFLOWER GIFT BOX

MEASUREMENTS
  • Side Panels DSP (envelope paper or card base from kit): 2 x 3
  • Side Panels Blackberry Bliss Cardstock: 2-1/4 x 3-1/4"
  • Top of Box DSP: 3 x 3
  • Top of Box Blackberry Bliss Square: 3-1/4" x 3-1/4"
  • Top of Box Honeycomb Piece: 3-1/4 x 3-1/4" (hand cut with paper snips, ok to be uneven edged)
  • Embellishments: Die Cut Sunflower, Die Cut Floral Piece, Die Cut Bee, Die Cut for Sentiment
  • Natural Finish Ribbon (About 12-14 inches to create a bow)
INSTRUCTIONS

Assemble your gift box (kraft brown scalloped box). Cut all of your pieces and glue the side panels together. If you have plain looking paper and would like to add some stamping like I added a few sunflowers to one panel then stamp before you glue that panel on.

I stuck very close to the kit for the top of the gift box. Trim a 3-1/4 (ish) square from the gold honeycomb sheet. I cut it uneven and a little zig-zag (ish) and layered that with the panel before adding the embellishments. I recommend a die cut or stamped sunflower for your topper with the floral die cut, bee. I stamped "For a one of a kind friend" in Blackberry Bliss ink onto the sentiment piece from the kit and then tied a bow and glued to the corner of the box.

NOTE: I used Stampin' Seal+ on the ribbon to secure it but I would actually recommend hot glue if you have it. If not, it's ok. Because it is a dimensional element that's bigger than normal I usually default to hot glue.

And that's it! I used Stampin' Dimensionals for the topper embellishment die cuts and multipurpose glue for the panels.

CUTTING UP YOUR ENVELOPES:

When it comes to making alternate projects with Paper Pumpkin kits, I use the printed envelopes as DSP layers on projects. You can cut up your envelopes various ways. I recommend trimming the sides off first so you can open it up and then cut accordingly. You can get a good look at the artwork this way too. Have fun with it! The card bases can easily also be cut in half and used as layers as well.

ALTERNATE CARD

MEASUREMENTS:
  • Card Base: 5-1/2 x 8-1/2 and score at 4-1/4" *Blackberry Bliss Cardstock
  • The Honeycomb piece (uncut) from the kit
  • Card Base cut to 3-1/4 x 3-3/4" (I wanted the honeycomb to show on all sides)
  • Die Cut and/ or Stamped Sunflowers
  • Blackberry Bliss Rectangle Die Cut from kit
  • Thank You Sentiment Die Cut (pink/ yellow tone) from kit
  • Embellishments: Iridescent Rhinestones
INSTRUCTIONS:

First, I ran out of sunflower die cuts to I hand stamped and fussy cut two more so I had a total of 3. I used the same ink/ shading technique for all three which was stamping in Crushed Curry/ Soft Suede and then shading with same colors (softer look) with sponge daubers. You can get a pack of 5 sponge daubers in the Annual Catalog (link below).

Cut your pieces and assemble. I put four adhesive dots in the four corners of the uncut specialty honeycomb sheet. It really pops against Blackberry Bliss.

Add your cardstock pattern layer. Add 3 sunflowers. I glued one sunflower down and popped the other two up on Stampin' Dimensionals. At the bottom of the cardstock layer glue the blackberry bliss die cut piece. Stamp "Thank You" in Blackberry Bliss ink onto the die cut for the sentiment and then pop that on dimensionals and place over the rectangle strip.

Finish with some iridescent rhinestones or whatever rhinestones you have in your collection.

I hope you enjoyed today's card projects.

Simple Ways to Add Color to Black & White Designer Series Paper: Rustic Harvest Cards

Hello! Today's video and cards are about ways to incorporate color easily to those Black & White Patterns in the Rustic Harvest Designer Series Paper.

I am also using some of the beautiful Fall paper as embellishments in the case of the card with the pumpkins and gourds as well as the beautiful bouquet of flowers.

Add color by drawing lines with Stampin' Blends
Cajun Craze Dark & Evening Evergreen Light
on Rustic Harvest DSP

Same technique with the Stampin' Blends but this is
Daffodil Delight Dark and Evening Evergreen Light

I also have a Halloween card idea and this one is pretty not scary. There is a spider but that's optional!

Have fun playing your Black & White Designer Paper patterns. Consider:
  • Blending Brushes
  • Stencils
  • Specialty Paper
  • The Halloween Washi Tape
  • Stamping Patterns
  • Ribbon
These could also really add some fun, colorful elements if you want to dress up the black & white DSP!

Add strips of cardstock: Pumpkin Pie in 3/8" pattern
for a nice easy pop of color!

CARD MEASUREMENTS:
  • Card Base: 4-1/4 x 11, score at 5-1/2" (Basic White Cardstock)
  • Black & White DSP: 4 x 5-1/4"
  • Add desired embellishments, stamps, die cuts

    For the Halloween Card:

  • Cut 3 or 4 strips of Pumpkin Pie cardstock to 3/8 x 11" and start adding to stripe pattern on DSP, trim edges and repeat as needed
  • Stamp 3 Pumpkins in Memento Tuxedo Black ink onto Pumpkin Pie Cardstock and cut out
  • Add "boo" and "spider" stamps to one of the pumpkins
  • Color the stem of pumpkins with Basic Black Stampin' Blends (I liked Light Basic Black)
  • Stamp Leafy Wreath in Pumpkin Pie Ink
  • Stamp Branch Wreath in Memento Tuxedo Black and Die Cut
  • Die cut 5 leafy branches from Cottage Wreaths Bundle in Basic Black Cardstock
  • Place wreath top center on dimensionals
  • The three pumpkins go under the wreath

    For the Fall Cards:

    Same design, different patterns:

  • With a ruler, draw lines with Stampin' Blends markers along the plaid pattern, 1 color one direction, the second color, opposite direction so it looks plaid
  • Fussy cut gourds and pumpkins from that piece of designer paper to use as embellishments
  • For the flowers, trim across the top edge of all flowers and also trim off stems at bottom, so just the flowers will fit on about half of the card
  • Stamp banner sentiment and die cut or fussy cut (I used Cajun Craze ink on Basic White)
  • For the gourds card, add a pop of sparkle with gold shimmer ribbon, a leaf and then the banner
  • Place gourds around sentiment to frame in and add embellishments
  • For the flower card, Banner will go at the top and place embellishments where desired
I hope you enjoyed today's card ideas!

Fall Card Tutorial 2022: How to Make Colorful Fall Scene Cards with the ...

I cannot wait for Fall. I am Team FALL. Where's the Pumpkin Spice Latte and pretty fall cards? Here, that's where they are!

Grassy Grove was one of my favorite bundles from Spring and I really wanted to bring it back out now we are starting to make cards just ahead of the next season. I knew it would make a great window scene backdrop but I couldn't resist another nature scene card!

Window Wishes Bundle, Metallic & Shimmer Specialty Paper
Hello Harvest Stamp Set & Grassy Grove Bundle (just the dies)

The baby wipe technique is a popular way to make colorful autumn scenes quickly and you don't have wipes laying around it's ok. I actually substituted paper towels this time and it still worked. I think the baby wipes are better but I'm really happy with the paper towel version too.

For the full tutorial you can refer to the YouTube replay but basically you want to use your re-inkers, about 4-7 drops of each of your colors on a damp paper towel folded into a square. You are basically creating your own multi-color ink pad. It's pretty fun!

To stamp the pattern I recommend choosing any tree stamp in your collection. I used Beauty of Friendship - the largest tree stamp - because it covers a lot of area quickly - but I've also used the tree stamp in Grassy Grove too. It's really about getting the tree texture but in pretty custom colors.

Using the Baby Wipe Technique in
Pumpkin Pie, Crushed Curry, Cajun Craze and Old Olive

The Starry Sky: If you haven't tried using the 2022-2024 In Color Glimmer Paper as a backdrop or sky scene yet, oh my goodness you will love it. Because they are ombre it has this perfect sky look and the shimmer will set your card apart! Look at how the deer pop in this scene!

The fun thing about scene cards is all of the different elements you can bring together in an unexpected way. The blending brushes create a soft grassy look and let's the fall leaves be the showstopper on your card.

CARD MEASUREMENTS:
  • Card Base: 5-1/2 x 8-1/2 score at 4-1/4" (Very Vanilla and Cajun Craze)
  • The Tree Scene Layer: Basic White Cardstock - 4 x 5-1/4"
  • The Glimmer Paper Layer: 4 x 5-1/4"
  • Sentiment Banner: 1 x 3" (just a hair under 1 inch to fit easily in Banner Pick-a-Punch
  • Die Cut Deer Mom and Baby in Early Espresso
  • Amber Gems

My 2024-2026 In Color Club Starts May 1st! IMPORTANT CHANGES!
