Halloween Cards to Make in 2023: Week 3 of the 12 Weeks of Halloween

Hello and welcome to WEEK 3 of the 12 Weeks of Halloween!

These projects are inspired by PAST Halloween Paper Pumpkin Kits but using current products. Today we are taking inspiration from the September 2018 Kit: Frights & Delights and the little ghost die cut! Today we are making our own ghost with the Songbird Punch!

My goal is provide some fun alternate ideas.

BOO CARD!

MEASUREMENTS

  • Card Base: 5-1/2 x 8-1/2" Score: 4-1/4" (Basic White Cardstock)
  • (1) Starry Sky Cardstock Layer 2-7/8 x 4-1/4"
  • (1) Them Bones DSP Layer (Pumpkin Pie with words pattern) 4 x 5-1/4"
  • (1) Them Bones DSP Layer saying "Boo!" 2-1/2 x 4"
  • (1) 1/2 x 3-3/4" Basic White Strip (for sentiment)
  • (2) Punched Out Songbirds (Basic White Cardstock)
  • (2) Glow in the Dark Bats
  • (2) Glow in the Dark Ghosts

INSTRUCTIONS

Stamp "Let's Get into the Spirit" from Bottled Happiness Stamp Set in Memento Tuxedo Black ink onto the white strip.

Stamp "Happy Halloween" on the inside of card in Starry Sky ink from the Bag of Bones Stamp set.

Punch out two songbirds in Basic White. Trim off head feather "bump" and trim off the tail. Give a slight curve when trimming off tail with Paper Snips scissors.

For the surprised ghost, draw two eyes and mouth with Stampin' Write Marker in Basic Black. Add arms by using the smaller punched out wing. Glue to ghost. Have the ghost hands come up to mouth.

For the happy ghost, draw the same eyes but then take the punched out beak piece (looks like a small heart) and color it black with the Stampin' Write marker. Use this as the mouth. Glue to ghost.

Assemble layers: Pumpkin Pie DSP pattern first, then Starry Sky layer, then BOO piece.

With dimensionals add the ghosts to either corner of the Boo paper. Add dimensionals and place "Let's Get Into the Spirit" under the boo layer.

Finish with glow in the dark embellishments!

OPTIONAL: Stamp inside of card (noted above) and glue a 1/2 strip of the "eek" "boo" DSP paper to the bottom inside of card.

TRICK OR TREAT CARD

MEASUREMENTS

  • Card Base: 5-1/2 x 8-1/2" Score: 4-1/4" (Basic White Cardstock)
  • (1) Pebbled Path Cardstock Nested Essential Die Cut (Largest Die)
  • (1) Pumpkin Pie Cardstock Nested Essential Die Cut (Second Largest Die)
  • (1) Them Bones DSP Layer (Trick or Treat Piece) 2-7/8 x 4-1/4"
  • (1) Them Bones DSP Layer (Herringbone Bat Pattern) 2-5/8 x 4-1/4"
  • (1) 3/8 x 4-1/4" Basic Black Strip (optional)
  • (2) Punched Out Songbirds (Basic White Cardstock)
    • SKELETON DIE CUT & ACCESSORIES (from Bag of Bones Dies)
    • Dancing Skeleton (full size from Them Bones DSP, black & white skeleton)
    • Top Hat (cut from black background on skeleton DSP sheet)
    • Dress Shoes  (cut from black background on skeleton DSP sheet)
    • 3 Bats  (cut from black background on skeleton DSP sheet)
    • Walking Stick and Bow Tie (Pebbled Path Cardstock)
  • (1) Glow in the Dark Bat

INSTRUCTIONS

This card actually doesn't have stamping!

Glue bat pattern DSP to right side of card front. Glue the Trick or Treat piece to the left. If you are making the coffin version you don't need the Basic Black strip. If you want to add skeleton only I recommend the Basic Black strip over the line where DSP meets.

With a Small Blending Brush add a little "smudged" look with Memento Tuxedo Black ink around the edges of outer coffin. It's okay to be messy and imperfect.

Emboss the Pumpkin Pie coffin piece with the Rope 3D Embossing Folder. Hopefully this gives a fabric vibe. Use Small Blending Brush to add very small amount of black ink just around the edges. Glue together. Add Wink of Stella around the outer edge where stitched pattern is for a shimmery finish on the coffin.

Add Wink of Stella to the shoes, cane and line in the top hat. Add skeleton to center of coffin with mini dimensionals. For fun, to make the shoes and hat look too big, add half of a mini dimensional to the shoes and hat before adding to skeleton. Decorate hat with one glow in the dark bat! Add bow tie. Isn't he dapper?!

Optional: add a touch of pumpkin pie to his eyes with the Stampin' Blend Pumpkin Pie Dark marker.

Pop coffin up on dimensionals and add on top of where the DSP meets, careful not to cover trick or treat sentiment.

NOTE: This size coffin will go over the top of the card. You will need a bigger envelope for this or use as a gift or in a gift bag or box.

Add Wink of Stella to the 3 bats you cut from leftover Skeleton DSP page. Add all 3 to card around the trick or treat saying.

I hope you enjoyed today's Halloween Cards!

Happy Crafting!

Make a Slider Box Card: Week 2 of the 12 Weeks of Halloween: Perfect Tri...

Welcome to Week 2 of the 12 Weeks of Halloween!

Today we are creating an adorable Slider Box Card! This is a card and "treat" holder in one!

I created this series because Paper Pumpkin is not doing a Halloween kit this year. I will be referencing and taking inspiration from past Paper Pumpkin kits but we will be using new, upcoming and current products from Stampin' Up!

SLIDER BOX CARD MEASUREMENTS

For the Slider Box:

  • 7-1/2 x 2-3/4" - Basic White Cardstock
  • Score at 5/8" on all 4 sides

With your bone folder fold the paper on the score lines. Cut with scissors on the score lines at either end of the slider box and mitre the edge on the tab next to the cut lines.

Add adhesive to tabs. I recommend a stronger adhesive like Stampin' Seal+ or Tear and Tape Adhesive. Glue tabs to end panels to create box.

For the Wrap/ Card:

  • 6-1/2 x 11-1/2" - Cajun Craze Cardstock *Use a 12 x 12 Sheet*
  • Score the slider panel first (this will hold your box base):
    • 1/2"
  • Burnish score line and measure next measurement from the burnished score line
    • 11/16" (1 notch above 5/8" - you can also try 5/8" I found that to be too tight)
  • Burnish score line and measure next measurement from the burnished score line
    • 1-9/16"
  • Burnish score line and measure next measurement from the burnished score line
    • 11/16"

Test to make sure the box base fits into this slider by wrapping it and test sliding it. If it fits, you can move on to creating the card above the box!

Glue the slider panel in place. I recommend keeping the box base in it when you adhere it.

To create the card above the slider, measure from the box to the tip of the cardstock. It should measure about 6-1/2" If so, score at 3-1/4" to create the card above the slider box.

My box was a hair too close to the card folded so I trimmed 1/16" off of the card edge and it fit! You may have measured perfectly. If so, no worries but I wanted to include this in case (like me) your measurements weren't perfect. It's ok! Modify and keep going!

For the panel inside of the card:

  • Inside panel: 3 x 6-1/4" (Basic White Cardstock)

To decorate the front of the card:

  • Basic Black Panel: 3 x 6-1/4"
  • DSP Layer for Card: 2-15/16 x 6" (Night Scene Block from Them Bones DSP)
  • (2) Regular Cut Tombstone Die Cuts (Gray Granite Cardstock)
  • (1) Mausoleum Door Tomb Die Cut (Gray Granite Cardstock)
  • (1) Full Waving Skeleton (Basic White Cardstock)
  • (2) Skeleton Bodies with no arms or legs (Basic White Cardstock)
  • (2) Skeleton Arms Die Cuts (Basic White Cardstock)
  • (2) Skeleton Legs Die Cuts (Basic White Cardstock)
  • (2) Die Cut Bats (Basic Black Cardstock)

To decorate the box panel:

  • Basic Black Panel: 1-3/8 x 6-1/4"
  • (2) DSP Box Panel: 1-1/8 x 6" (Plaid Pattern Them Bones DSP) *1 for inside box & 1 front of box
  • (1) Sentiment Banner 1 x 4" (Basic White Cardstock)
  • (6) Die Cut Bones - Various sizes (Basic White Cardstock)
  • (2) Die Cut Bats (Basic Black Cardstock)

INSTRUCTIONS

For the box base:

The most important tip for creating the wrap is to score at the 1/2" mark, fold and then burnish with your bone folder and then measure from that score line for the next scoring measurement. You do this at every score line. Score, fold and then do the next measurement from the score line you just folded.

The 1/2" is your glue tab. The 5/8" are the sides of the box and the 1-1/2" is the width of the box. Once you've scored those lines, add adhesive to the tabs and assemble box base.

Place box base inside the slider wrap before gluing slider wrap into place. Place glue on the 1/2" flap and glue into place.

For the card:

You should have a 6-1/2" panel left from the slider box holder. This is going to become your card. Score at 3-1/4" and burnish that score line with your bone folder as well.

Glue the Basic Black panel first and your DSP on top.

For the stamping:

Stamp sentiment for the banner in Starry Sky ink.

Stamp skeletons and skeleton extremities in Memento Tuxedo Black ink.

OPTIONAL: Add Basic Gray ink with a Small Blending Brush to make your tombstones look aged and a little dirty. Blend around the edges of die cuts. Tap off excess before blending ink onto tombstones. (Lay down scrap paper or protect your surface)

For the inside panel, use a blending brush with Starry Sky ink to create a misty look around the edges. Stamp "Happy Halloween" in Pumpkin Pie ink in the center and stamp a couple of flying bats in Memento Tuxedo Black ink around your greeting.

Assembling your die cuts:

I lined up the three tombstones and placed one skeleton at each tombstone. Place largest tomb and skeleton center with dimensionals or mini dimensionals.

The other tombstones have 1 skeleton with legs only and 1 skeleton with arms only. You create your desired looks. You can position them and add the arms and legs as you like with mini dimensionals.

Place die cut bats flying between the tombstones.

Place random bones (3) each on either side of the sentiment banner on bottom of box. Various sizes.

Glue 2 flying die cut bats around the sentiment where desired.

OPTIONAL: Don't forget to add that DSP Plaid strip to the inside of the base of your slider box for an added pop of color and fun!

FILL WITH DESIRED TRICKS OR TREATS!

I hope you enjoyed today's Slider Box Card tutorial and ideas!

Reviving Halloween Classics: Crafting Cards & Treats from Past Paper Pum...

This is Week 1 of the 12 Weeks of Halloween! I'll be taking inspiration from past Halloween Paper Pumpkin Kits to make alternate projects from now until Halloween using current products from the Annual and upcoming Mini Catalogs.

The September Paper Pumpkin Kit in 2023 will focus on love and gratitude rather than Halloween, so this is my alternative series for those of us who make Halloween cards and projects. Today's Paper Pumpkin inspiration is from the September 2022 Paper Pumpkin Kit: Spooky Treats which featured a fun plaid pattern. We are going to create our own version of the plaid today using the sketched plaid stamp set. Silhouette Card - By My Side & Sketched Plaid Stamp Sets

MEASUREMENTS

  • Card Base: 5-1/2 x 8-1/2" Score: 4-1/4" (Basic Black Cardstock)
  • (2) Basic White Layers 4 x 5-1/4" (One inside and one for the outside of the card)
  • (1) Basic White Layer 3-1/2 x 4-3/4" (this is for the scene with the kids)
  • (1) 2-3/8" Circle Punch (Lemon Lolly Cardstock)
  • (2) Die Cut Clouds (Lazy Days Dies for the cloud shapes)
  • (5) Adhesive Backed Sparke Gems in Silver

INSTRUCTIONS

Creating the Plaid Background:

Stamp piece of Basic White (4 x 5-1/4" size) with the Sketch Plaid Background Stamp in Pumpkin Pie ink.

Use Stampin' Blends in the following shades to create multi color plaid pattern (left to right):

  • Fresh Freesia Dark
  • Daffodil Delight Dark
  • Basic Black Light (or Stampin' Write Marker in Basic Black if you want very thin black line)
  • Orchid Oasis Light

To create the plaid multi-color pattern, using a ruler add these lines vertically first and then repeat adding horizontally. The plaid pattern when stamped has larger white areas and I focused on adding the lines of the above listed colors in the larger white spaces for a multi color look. Once you've added your lines in both directions, set aside.

NOTE: The original Paper Pumpkin plaid pattern has a pumpkin pie base (meaning the majority of color is pumpkin pie) My alternate has a white base. If you'd prefer to do this on a piece of Pumpkin Pie cardstock it would be just as cute! The only thing would be it will change the color of the yellow and purples slightly. That is why I chose white but this color palette is inspired by the September 2022 Color Palette.

Creating the Silhouette Night Scene:

Start by stamping the kids in Basic White onto your layer. (Basic White 3-1/2 x 4-3/4" piece) You could also start with a larger piece and then trim down to this size later.

Stamp kids from By Your Side Stamp Set in Memento Tuxedo Black ink.

Stamp the the same kids onto the Stampin' Up! Masking Paper. Fussy cut boy, girl and dog. Place the masks over the stamped kids on the Basic White layer.

Once your masking paper is in place you will use your Blending Brushes with inks to create the night scene in the following colors:

  • Fresh Freesia (Bottom of Layer)
  • Orchid Oasis (Middle of Layer)
  • Starry Sky (Top of Layer)

Dab blending brush in ink color. Dab off excess on scrap paper and using a soft, circular repetitive motion, add colors to your scene. Think ombre look but it does not have to be perfect. Do each color several times until you've worked across the layer. I like to come in from the sides or from the bottom or top and then work my way into the center of the layer for softer colors around the kids. When you are happy with your night sky gently remove the masks.

Color the kids in entirely with the Stampin' Write Marker in Basic Black. I like about two layers for a really opaque black look. Repeat same with the adorable dog!

Optional: Add some scene details. With Grassy Grove Stamp Set stamp in Stayz On Black, Stamp twice at the feet of the charcters so it looks like they are walking on grass.

Optional: Add some spooky branches with the long branch stamp from Seasonal Branches Stamp Set in Stayz On or Memento Black. Come in above the kids on either side.

Glue the plaid pattern to your Basic Black card base.

Glue the scene of the kids next. I actually like to color around the edges of this layer with the Stampin' Write Marker in Basic Black as well. This is optional but do this before gluing to card.

Add moon between the two kids with dimensionals.

Stamp sentiment "Boo!" from Cottage Wreaths Stamp Set on smaller cloud with Orchid Oasis ink. Add to card with Mini dimensional. Very slightly overlap with moon.

Stamp sentiment "Here for you" from By Your Side Stamp Set with Orchid Oasis ink. Add to card with Mini dimensional. Very slightly overlap with moon.

Finish with Sparkle Gems! I thought Silver stood out like stars in that dark sky!

Treat Bag Topper (Sandwich Size Baggie)

MEASUREMENTS

  • Treat Topper Base: 5 x 7" Score at 2-1/2" (Basic Black Cardstock)
  • Basic White Layer: 2-1/4 x 6-3/4"
  • (1) 2-3/8" Circle Punch (Lemon Lolly Cardstock)
  • (2) Die Cut Clouds (I used Lazy Days Dies for the cloud shapes)
  • (3) Sparkle Gems in Black

INSTRUCTIONS

Repeat the same exact steps to make your plaid pattern as instructed on the card but this time it's on the 2-1/4 x 6-3/4" size.

Stamp your boy and and dog from the By My Side Stamp Set in Memento Tuxedo Black ink directly onto the plaid pattern on the right side. Color stamped images in fully with Stampin' Write Basic Black Marker.

Glue Moon to the left side.

Stamp branches in Memento Tuxedo Black ink onto the plaid layer and slightly overlapping on the moon from both sides.

Stamp sentiments on clouds just like the card only this time I used "Boo!" from Cottage Wreath Stamp Set and "Hi, Sweet Friend" from By My Side in Memento Tuxedo Black ink.

Glue clouds so they slightly overlap the moon on both sides.

Finish with Sparkle Gems in Black.

NOTE: The width of my sandwich bag measured around 6-3/4" so that's why my topper is 7" but you can adjust this topper size depending on your treat bag size.

I hope you enjoyed today's Halloween Card and Treat Topper!

Here are some visuals of the card steps if you need them!

Showing the mask over the stamped images for when you add your night sky. Coloring the silhouette. Remove your mask gently. While I can make a mask last several rounds I can't guarantee it will work after the first use. Just be patient and take your time removing your masks.

Happy Crafting!

Melinda

First Look at September 2023 Paper Pumpkin: With Love & Gratitude (No Halloween Theme This Year)

Here is the first look at the September Paper Pumpkin Kit...

If you like Fall and Florals you will be happy. If you were expecting a Halloween kit (like I was) there isn't one from Paper Pumpkin this year.

While I will not know exactly what's in the kit until I receive it, I'm pretty sure by the overall theme it's not what I was expecting.

I have been a subscriber personally for 6 years and every year the September kit had some element of Halloween.

I am sharing my honest opinion. I think this kit is beautiful and I love the add-on journal. I will still be ordering this kit and creating with it but as a customer I am disappointed.

I know this is very divided and some have no need for Halloween and I understand that, but these kits have become a tradition with my family and I am disappointed I will not have that option this year from Paper Pumpkin.

Part of this kit includes treat packaging so, of course, I will be doing alternates with those but I'll be shifting focus to the Mini Catalog Halloween products in September.
